Applications of Modified Liquid Natural Rubber (LNR)

Liquid natural rubber has been defined as a form of natural rubber with similar microstructure of shorter polymeric chains with much molecular weight. It can be classified as one of the most important natural resources used industrially because of its excellent elastic property. However, due to unsaturation present in the polymer backbone, LNR can be degraded when exposed to sunlight, ozone and oxygen. Review indicated that the chemical modification is one the options to encounter the negative properties of LNR by changing its unsaturated structure to yield the saturated polymer. Up to date, our group have carried out a number of modifications towards LNR including hydrogenation, oxidation, hydroxylation and fluorination. The modified LNR possess properties such as better thermal and chemical stabilities, more hydrophobic etc.
